1 Corinthians 10:1 – 11:1

1) In your own words, what is “idolatry” according to the Bible?
2) Can you identify some “idols” of your heart? Do you see its destructive power? Do you see the way “idols” make us self-centered and unable to love others?

A life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts.
Soren Kierkegaard

Playing God is not just difficult, it’s impossible. But because of our blind pride, we play God, we seem to have to play God, and we keep on playing God. And because of our finiteness, we just can’t quite ever make it. So we have to look elsewhere for a backup, a homemade God substitute. We thus spend our lives swinging between the impossible (playing God), and the inadequate (relying on anything short of God to be God).”
Rebecca Manley Pippert

An idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts, “If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I ‘ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.” There are many ways to describe that kind of relationship to something, but perhaps the best one is worship.
Timothy Keller
